This slow cooker Amish-style blueberry oatmeal is a simple, filling breakfast that has been feeding farm families for many years. It starts the same way I have made it for a long time: dry rolled oats go into the slow cooker first, then a big pile of frozen blueberries is poured right on top, followed by just three more pantry items.
By the next morning, everything turns soft and creamy, with little pockets of juicy berries throughout. It reminds me of the big pots of oats my mom used to keep on the back of the stove during harvest time — except now the slow cooker watches over it while we sleep. With only five ingredients and very little work, it’s the kind of cozy, make-ahead breakfast I find myself wanting again and again.
Scoop the warm blueberry oatmeal into sturdy bowls and pour a little cold milk or cream on top for a nice contrast. A small piece of butter melting into each bowl gives it that classic Amish touch. If you like it sweeter, put a small pitcher of maple syrup or a bowl of brown sugar on the table.
This oatmeal goes nicely with scrambled eggs or a slice of ham if you want more protein, and a warm cup of coffee or tea beside it makes it feel like a full farmhouse breakfast. Leftovers heat up well with a splash of extra milk, so you can enjoy this oatmeal for several mornings in a row.
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2 cups frozen blueberries
- 4 cups water
- ⅓ cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt (optional, but traditional in oatmeal)
Slow Cooker Amish Blueberry Oatmeal: Directions
- Set your 3- to 4-quart slow cooker on a heat-safe counter. If you’d like easier cleanup, lightly grease the inside with a little butter or cooking spray. This step is optional.
- Pour the dry rolled oats into the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread them out gently with a spoon so they make an even, flat layer.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt (if you’re using it) evenly over the dry oats. Don’t stir yet — just let the layers sit as they are.
- With the lid off and the slow cooker unplugged, pour the frozen blueberries straight over the oats and sugar mixture. Spread them out into an even layer while they’re still frozen.
- Carefully pour the water over the blueberries and oats, trying not to mix up the layers too much. As it cooks, the water will slowly soak down through the oats.
- Put the lid on the slow cooker. Set it to LOW and cook for 6 to 8 hours, or overnight, until the oats are soft and the blueberries have burst, turning the oatmeal a deep blue-purple color.
- Once it’s done cooking, stir the oatmeal well to mix the layers together and even out the texture. If it looks too thick, stir in a little warm water or milk until it’s just how you like it.
- Taste the oatmeal and add more brown sugar or a little maple syrup if you want it sweeter. Serve it hot, with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon or a splash of milk on top if you’d like.
