There is something really comforting about a slow cooker meal that doesn’t ask much of you but still turns out rich, hearty, and perfect for a table full of hungry people. Then the slow cooker does all the long, slow work of turning stew meat into tender bites covered in a tasty secret sauce. It’s the kind of easy, pantry-friendly dinner that feels right at home in a Midwestern kitchen, especially on a busy weekend when everyone comes in hungry.

Serve this saucy beef over mashed potatoes, buttery egg noodles, or steamed white rice so you don’t waste a single drop of sauce. You can add green beans, buttered corn, or a simple crisp salad on the side to balance the rich taste, and warm dinner rolls are always great for soaking up the extra sauce.

Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds frozen raw beef stew meat
  • 1 bottle (16 ounces) thousand island dressing
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry onion soup mix
  • 1 cup beef broth

Slow Cooker Secret Sauce Beef: Directions

  1. Place the frozen beef stew meat into the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread the pieces out into one even layer so they cook evenly.
  2. Pour the thousand island dressing evenly over the top of the beef. Then sprinkle the dry onion soup mix all across the top of the dressing.
  3. Pour the beef broth into the slow cooker around the meat. Put the lid on and cook on LOW for 8 to 9 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the beef is very soft and tender.
  4. If you can, stir the beef gently once or twice while it cooks so the sauce coats every piece. Near the end of cooking, taste the sauce and stir again.
  5. Spoon the hot beef and sauce over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice, making sure to add plenty of sauce on top before serving.
