These 4-ingredient slow cooker cheesy onion fries are the easiest party side ever! Frozen fries cook in a creamy onion sauce topped with melty cheddar cheese. No peeling, no chopping, just dump and cook. Perfect for cookouts, potlucks, or any time you need a warm, cheesy crowd-pleaser.

These simple 4-ingredient slow cooker cheesy onion fries are my favorite trick for holidays. You just put everything in the slow cooker, walk away, and come back to a warm, cheesy, melty side dish that tastes just like fries from a diner. I first made this for Memorial Day when my oven was already full of burgers, sausages, and baked beans.

Using frozen crinkle-cut fries means you don’t have to peel or cut anything. The slow cooker keeps the fries hot and cheesy for a long time. This makes it perfect for parties where guests can snack whenever they want, and hosts don’t have to keep watching the stove.

Serve these cheesy onion fries warm, right from the slow cooker, with a big spoon so people can scoop their own portion. They taste amazing next to grilled burgers, hot dogs, or BBQ chicken. They also stay good for a long time on a buffet table at parties.

Put out extra toppings like sour cream, chopped green onions, bacon bits, or hot sauce so everyone can make their fries just how they like them. You can even turn this into a full meal by adding leftover pulled pork or chili on top, with a small salad or watermelon slices on the side.

Servings: 6 to 8

Ingredients

  • 1 (28–32 ounce) bag frozen crinkle-cut french fries
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of onion soup
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry onion soup mix

Slow Cooker Cheesy Onion Fries: Directions

  1. Spray the inside of a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker lightly with nonstick cooking spray. This makes cleaning up much easier later.
  2. Put the frozen crinkle-cut fries into the bottom of the slow cooker first. Spread them out into one even layer so every fry cooks the same amount.
  3. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the condensed cream of onion soup together with the dry onion soup mix. Mix well until it is thick and smooth, with no little lumps left.
  4. Pour the onion soup mixture over the fries. Use a spatula to spread it around gently so most of the fries get a light coating. It’s okay if it’s not perfect — it will all melt together as it cooks.
  5. Spread ¾ cup of the shredded cheddar cheese all over the fries. Save the last ¼ cup of cheese for later.
  6. Put the lid on the slow cooker. Cook it on High heat about 2- 3 hrs or on Low heat for 4 – 5 hours. The fries are done when they are soft enough to poke with a fork and the edges are lightly browned and crispy.
  7. Once the fries are cooked and bubbling around the edges, sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of cheddar cheese on top. Cover again and wait 5 to 10 minutes, just until the cheese melts completely.
  8. When serving, scoop gently from the bottom of the slow cooker so each portion has a nice mix of cheesy fries and onion sauce. Switch the slow cooker to WARM and leave the lid slightly open so guests can help themselves while it stays hot.
