Slow Cooker Depression Era Labor Day Beans: These slow cooker beans are perfect for a busy weekend when you want a big, cozy meal without standing over a hot stove all day. The idea comes from old-fashioned Depression Era cooking, where cooks used a few cheap pantry items to make something filling and tasty. Here, canned beans and a sausage ring team up to make a smoky, sweet pot of beans that can feed a whole crowd — and it barely takes any work at all.

Bring these beans to your next cookout alongside burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato salad, coleslaw, or a fresh green salad. They’re also great with warm cornbread, crunchy pickles, and sliced onions on the side. Got extra? Spoon the leftovers over toast or a baked potato the next day for an easy meal.

Sweet, smoky, and packed with old-fashioned charm, these slow cooker beans mix canned baked beans, a juicy sausage ring, soft onions, and brown sugar for a rich, comforting dish. It’s a budget-friendly recipe that needs almost no prep, making it perfect for potlucks, cookouts, or lazy weekends when you want big flavor with little fuss.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) generic baked beans
  • 1 frozen raw beef sausage ring (about 12 to 14 ounces)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Slow Cooker Depression Era Labor Day Beans: Directions

  1. Get your slow cooker ready. If you want easy cleanup later, spray the inside of the slow cooker with a light coat of nonstick spray. Place the frozen sausage ring right in the bottom of the pot — don’t worry about thawing it first.
  2. Add the onions and sugar. Spread the sliced onion pieces all around and over the sausage ring so they cook down and soften. Then sprinkle the brown sugar evenly across the top so it melts into everything as it cooks.
  3. Pour in the beans. Empty both cans of baked beans over the sausage and onions. Use a spoon to spread the beans over the sausage ring. This helps the food cook evenly.
  4. Cook low and slow. Cover the slow cooker and cook it on Low flame for 6 -7 hrs or High heat for 3 -4 hours, until the pork is soft and fully cooked. You’ll know it’s done when the sausage is cooked all the way through and the onions turn soft and see-through.
  5. Slice and serve. Carefully lift the hot sausage ring out of the slow cooker using tongs or a large spoon. Let it cool for about 1 minute. Then cut it into small, easy-to-eat pieces. Stir the sausage pieces back into the beans so every bite has some meat. Serve the beans warm and enjoy!
