Ground Beef & Gravy

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped small

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)

Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes: Instructions

Step 1: Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Put the potato cubes in a pot and cover them with water. Add a pinch of salt.
  2. Boil the potatoes on the stove until they feel soft when you poke them with a fork, about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Drain the water away carefully.
  4. Mash the potatoes with a fork or masher until smooth.
  5. Mix in the butter, warm milk, and salt. Stir until the potatoes are soft and creamy.
  6. Cover the pot to keep the potatoes warm while you make the beef.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef 7. Put a skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium. 8. Add the ground beef and chopped onion to the skillet. 9. Cook and stir until the beef turns brown and the onion turns soft, about 5–7 minutes. 10. Add the minced garlic and cook for just 30 seconds, stirring so it doesn’t burn.

Step 3: Make the Gravy 11. Push the beef to one side of the pan. Add the butter and flour to the empty space. 12. Stir the butter and flour together and cook for 1 minute, until it smells nutty and looks smooth. 13. Slowly pour in the beef broth a little at a time, stirring the whole time so no lumps form. 14. Mix the beef back into the gravy. 15. Add salt, black pepper, and paprika if you’re using it.

Step 4: Let It Simmer 16. Turn the heat down low and let the gravy bubble gently for 5–7 minutes. 17. Stir it now and then, until the gravy turns thick and rich.

Step 5: Serve 18. Scoop a big spoonful of mashed potatoes onto each plate. 19. Pour the beef and gravy right on top. 20. Serve while it’s hot and enjoy!
