Slow cooker 5-ingredient Amish bacon fat noodles are a simple, tasty dish that comes from an old farmhouse kitchen style, where nothing yummy ever gets thrown away. Bacon grease adds rich flavor to plain egg noodles, and the slow cooker makes this dish super easy, since it does most of the work while the noodles soak up broth and little bits of smoky bacon. It may be a simple recipe, but this easy mix of everyday pantry items makes a comfort food dish that tastes way better than you’d expect from such a short ingredient list.

Serve these noodles next to simple cooked green beans, buttery peas, or a crunchy cucumber salad to balance out the richness. They also taste great as a side dish with roast chicken, pork chops, ham, or sausage, but they’re filling enough to enjoy all by themselves for a simple supper. A small spoonful of applesauce on the side would also match the old-fashioned feel of this dish really well.

Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon, chopped
  • 12 ounces wide egg noodles
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 3 tablespoons reserved bacon fat
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped

Slow Cooker Amish Bacon Fat Noodles: Directions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook it, stirring often, until it turns crispy and brown. Move the cooked bacon onto a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the extra grease. Save 3 tablespoons of the bacon fat left in the pan.
  2. Add the chopped onion into the skillet with the saved bacon fat. Cook it for about 3 to 4 minutes, stirring now and then, until the onion turns soft and slightly golden in color.
  3. Pour the egg noodles, the softened onion, the chicken broth, and half of the cooked bacon into the slow cooker. Stir everything gently so it’s evenly mixed together.
  4. Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 1½ to 2 hours. If your slow cooker gets very hot, stir once or twice during cooking. The noodles are ready when they turn soft and most of the liquid has soaked in.
  5. Right before serving, stir in the rest of the cooked bacon. Taste the noodles and add more salt or pepper if you like. Serve them warm, straight from the slow cooker.
